Homeschooling in Orange County, CA

A message from Starr Ranch Sanctuary:

Dear Home School Families and Groups,

Starr Ranch would like to remind you that we still have spaces for our summer Junior Biologists program, especially our June sessions reserved for homeschoolers. Attached is a PDF flyer with more details, and a text version appears below my signature. Please help us spread the word and pass this announcement on to other groups and families whom you think may be interested!

Please feel free to contact me or our Director of Research and Education, Sandy DeSimone (sdesimone@audubon.org), if you have any questions.

Hope to see you this summer!

Starr Ranch Sanctuary, a 4000-acre Audubon nature preserve east of Dove Canyon and Coto de Caza, announces our 2009 summer program for kids. Our goal is to connect people with nature, so we have created experiences that are exciting and fun. Children ages 8 – 13 are invited to join the Starr Ranch scientific team as "Starr Ranch Junior Biologists" (SRJB) to learn hands-on how scientists study wild animals and their habitats. SRJB I kids explore native habitats and have fun with some of the techniques scientists use to study wild animals. We’re offering two sessions of SRJB I: June 8-12 or July 6-10. In SRJB II, children participate in research on large mammals, owls, and stream ecology. Two sessions of SRJB II (SRJB I required) run June 15-19 or July 13-17. Both SRJB I and II meet Monday – Thursday, 8 a.m. – noon; Friday 7 – 10 p.m. SRJB III (SRJB I and II required) is offered for older children ages 10 - 13, who camp at the Ranch and do an advanced study on the animals and habitats introduced in SRJB II. Two different sessions of SRJB III meet June 22–June 26 (Ecology of Bell Creek) and July 20–July 24 (Effects of Ranch Roads on Wildlife). SRJB III will meet Monday – Wednesday, 8 a.m. – noon, and Thursday 1 p.m. – Friday noon (campout). Cost is $150 for 1 week ($25 discount per additional sibling or session). Financial aid is available. For reservations call: 949-858-0131. For details on each session, please see our website: www.starr-ranch.org or call 949-858-0309.
