Knitting to Learn – Knitting and more for Homeschoolers
“The brain discovers what the fingers explore.” Frank Wilson, Neurologist
Knitting (crochet too!) is a different type of “brainwork” that helps build a strong foundation for mathematics, reading, and critical thinking. Knitting engages both hands and eyes in a variety of movements in 3D space that strengthen visual tracking, including crossing the midline. The left and right sides of the brain are stimulated as hands work rhythmically to form stitches. Making a toy animal, scarf or hat from start to finish with colorful yarn and wooden needles supports creative expression while forming a tangible picture of the student's accomplishment.
I teach handwork (knitting, crochet, simple sewing) to children and adults in individual, small group and classroom settings. I homeschooled my younger son (now in college) for seven years.
