OC Homeschooling

Homeschooling in Orange County, CA

Hi All,

AskTracy here. I have been involved with music for my kids for the past 9 years and have been asked constantly about music lessons/schools, bands, orchestras, where they are, who's who and who's good...here is a list of music options from how to find a teacher to what recording studios we've worked with in the Orange County area. I have worked with most of these people at one time or another or have spoken to them about their programs. If you contact any of these resources, please let them know that you found them through AskTracy.

Please feel free to add to this list. : )

Getting Started- Finding a Teacher

~Word of mouth. Yes, ask around. Find out from other families who they use and make sure you ask if they like their teacher. You'd be surprised at how many families will keep the same music teacher and not even like them. You are allowed to switch teachers. There are a million music teachers (okay, slight exaggeration), there IS a teacher that will match your families needs and personalities.

~Contact Nancy Lau with MTAC (Music Teachers Association of California). She is the referral person for the Orange Coast Cities area for the MTAC and she is VERY helpful. Nancy tries to match you and your child with the right teacher. Her phone number is (949) 858-5306. Let her know that you got her number from me. Why MTAC? The MTAC offers The Certificate of Merit Program and they have a schedule of Music Festivals and events throughout the school year.

Instrument Rentals/Music Stores
Unless you have an instrument already, I highly recommend renting. Renting ranges from about $22-$30 a month.

I have rented a violin from the very start with Stephen Davy in Laguna Beach. Not only is he very knowledgeable in string instruments, he can fix just about anything. Yes, I have heard the sound of someone stepping on a violin...yikes!

Greg at Coast Band Music in Mission Viejo is always there and is always friendly. The store not only has rentals/purchase, but a ton of sheet music as well. If he doesn't have it, he'll order it for you.

This is my kids favorite music store. I can't get them out of there in less than 30 minutes. Their customer service is outstanding and they are very knowledgeable about their products. There are no rentals here, but they can outfit a full rock concert, from the lights, to the drums, amps... You name it, they've got it!

Orchestras, Bands, Ensembles, and Schools

Ms.K at Phoenix Feather Academy of Music was the very first music teacher that both of my children had (still have for my youngest). This progam offers a variety of piano lessons (group), different age groups (Mommy & Me), and a VERY energetic teacher. Kirsten Weymar teaches the children how to read music and sing solfege (do, re, mi, fa, sol... good thing you can't hear my singing voice! : )) with such a fun delivery, that the kids don't even realize that they are learning. The school also offers private lessons (guitar, piano, ect.) with other teachers as well.

Mari Haig is a rare gem when it comes to string teachers in Orange County. She has been in the music industry for over 30 years, playing with some of the world's best musicians. She now produces award winning music students. Private lessons are hard to come by for this extremely busy musician/teacher, BUT, I know for a fact that she is starting an ALL HOMESCHOOL ENSEMBLE in Laguna Beach that is in the works as I write this. Please contact Mari through her website for more information.

If you live in the RSM area, this is another good store to go to. Not only are they a store, but they offer lessons as well. One of the teachers is very Russian, with an "Old School" personality to match. They say Alex is one of the best and should be teaching at a conservatory because that's really his level of expertise. You'll find him at Rancho Canyon Music.

Hi Tracy,

My son takes piano lessons from a wonderful teacher in Ladera Ranch! Her name is Carol Clark and her studio is Music Ed4U. She teaches beginning to advanced and I love her approach. My son has learning disabilities, but he picked up the piano quickly with her simple approach. I'm amazed at his progress! She currently has openings for daytime homeschoolers. Her number is (949) 246-5815.

Hi All-

I am a violin teacher in the Orange/Tustin area, and I have openings for daytime homeschool students. I am also a strings teacher for Woodbridge High School in Irvine and Orange Lutheran High School. My studio currently ranges in age from 6 to 18, mostly beginning and intermediate students.

For more information contact me at (949) 981-5277 or justinwong24@gmail.com

Hi All:
I am a certified piano teacher who has worked with homeschoolers for about 10 years. I teach my
students with a sophisticated approach that incorporates music theory and learning patterns in
sight reading. Having a good foundation in music theory develops a student's sight reading ability
and therefore their progression rate. My students have a good progression rate. Email me and I will
explain more about this approach. pianoharmony1@hotmail.com

I also work as a private tutor in math and chemistry. I have been tutoring for over 15 years for
local high schools, colleges and area homeschoolers.
I have a doctorate in a related science field. I tutor through Calculus I and general chemistry.
Group rates are also available. mathchemtutor1@hotmail.com
References are available on request. Email me to discuss.
Thank you.

Hi Tracy -- I'd like to add my homeschool to your comprehensive list of musical opportunities.    I started Orange County Homeschool Choir in 2008.  It's a secular choir, fully integrated for students of all abilities, and we perform at the end of each 8-12 week session.  Past sessions have included “Let There Be Peace on Earth,” “Money Makes the World Go Around”, “Animal Voices,” “EarthSongs,” and “American Characters.”

We meet on Wednesday mornings in Costa Mesa.  See my website for current information about the choir:  http://bethmusic.net/ochomeschool.html
